Apple Ring Pastries

Impress your guests with these beautiful donut-shaped pastries, simply made with a thick slice of apple, a dash of cinnamon, wrapped in flaky and sweet puff pastry.
Quick and easy to make, and tastes just like apple pie!

Apple season is here and I got a brand NEW apple dessert recipe for you.

A fall-inspired, simple, fun and delicious dessert, in a beautiful donut shape (or maybe it looks more like a pumpkin ;).

Made with a cinnamon-flavored apple ring, wrapped in crispy and flaky puff pastry.

I was scrolling through my Instagram reel feed the other day and saw a quick video of apple rings wrapped in pastry.

I don't really know who posted it, nor how exactly those pastries were made, but I really  loved the idea and got inspired.

I experimented with a few things and here it is, my new creation for you!

This recipe is surely a keeper! And for pretty good reasons. It only requires very few readily available ingredients (check out the list below!!).

 It's quick and simple.
And you end up with a impressively beautiful and delicately delicious dessert.

It goes without saying that I love apple desserts.
You probably have guessed it by the many recipes with apples on the blog.
But what's not to love about healthy, naturally sweet and juicy apples wrapped in buttery and crispy pastry?!?
Wholesome and comforting. The aroma of the apples mixed with cinnamon will make your kitchen smell like the holidays.
The best!

You can make your own puff pastry or, like I did, use store bought puff pastry.
Much easier and a lot quicker!
Here are other recipes using puff pastries you might like: Italian cream hornsberries and custard pastries, almond swirlsmillefoglie cake,

For this recipe, made sure to use large apple, the bigger the apple the bigger will be your dessert (and easier to work around it).

Peel and cut the apple in thick slices crosswise. I remove a sliver from the top and the bottom of the apple, then cut each into four slices.

Remove the core and make a hole in the middle. I used a round cookie cutter - 1 inch in diameter. But you can cut with a knife. Note: I would not go any smaller than 1 inch for the hole, or the wrapping part will be harder.

Sprinkle the apple slices with cinnamon. As much or ss little as your tastebuds ask for!

Next you need to  roll out the puff pastry if needed (I used Jus Rol puff pastry which is already pre-rolled!),  sprinkle with a little sugar (you can do regular or brown sugar or cinnamon/sugar mix).

Cut the puff pastry  into strips. I use this roller, but you can cut with simple knife. These strips don't need to be perfect so don't worry too much about straight lines.

I cut the pastry lenghtwise into 1 inch strips, and then into shorter little strips about 2 inches long.

You are welcome to test it out before you cut all your strips. Each strip should go around the apple ring one time, and can be stretched too.

Wrap each apple rings with about 8 to 10 pastry strips as needed: poke the end of one strips in the hole, hold it with one finger and wrap the pastry around the ring and under with the other hand.

Make sure to overlap the strips a little. You can stretch the pastry  if needed, and try to keep the middle hole open if possible.

If there's extra pastry under the apple slice you  remove it, or flatten it out with your fingers like I did.

For the egg wash: beat one egg with a tablespoon of water, and brush the pastries. You can also use milk if you rather not use eggs.

Bake at 400F for about 25 minutes, until golden and crispy. Make sure to set the timer for 20 minutes and check the top ... you don't want to burn it. If it look already golden you can place the tray lower in the over or cover loosely with aluminum foil.

You can serve warm or hot right out of the oven. Don't forget a scoop of ice cream. Heavenly!

Happy baking!
